Gemma Atkins Contemporary Artist and Illustrator
Gemma is a contemporary artist and illustrator originally from North Wales, now based in Chester. Working across a diverse range of mixed media, she combines acrylic paint, pens, and other materials to create bold, expressive artworks. She graduated from Wrexham University (formerly NEWI) with a BA (Hons) in Illustration in 2003, and her background in illustration continues to shape her distinctive visual language.
Driven by a passion for colour, composition, and form, Gemma’s practice ranges from detailed monochromatic drawings and delicate botanical illustrations to contemporary acrylic paintings. Her work explores layered textures, dynamic mark-making, and rich colour palettes, offering fresh interpretations of landscapes, architecture, botanical subjects, and abstract forms. Whether working in line or paint, her practice is united by an ongoing exploration of shape, balance, and visual storytelling.
Gemma’s signature strength lies in capturing the character and atmosphere of a place, as well as the beauty and intricate detail of the natural world. Inspired by the landscapes, architecture, and flora of North Wales, Chester, and beyond, she transforms familiar scenes and botanical subjects into artwork that feels both personal and evocative.

As co-founder of Oren Art Gallery, Gemma continues to exhibit her work and collaborate with fellow artists, contributing to a vibrant contemporary art community while developing her distinctive blend of illustration, botanical art, painting, and design.
